Treadmills Vs Cross Trainers Which Is The Best Piece Of Fitness
Home gym gear is big business these days with companies selling items by the bucket load and there are always new items for people to try to shape up on. Each piece of kit claims to be the one that will revolutionise your life and your fitness plan. But how effective are the more complex pieces of equipment in comparison with the treadmill one of the initial items to become popular?
One of the Original Treadmills
The treadmill is a straight forward continuous track that goes in the opposite direction to the person exercising and can be programmed from a strolling speed right through to a fast run should you wish to push yourself . Many have technology that allows you to monitor how your heart rate has changed and how many calories you would have burned off from your exercise. Some of them have preset workouts that mean you essentially have your own personal trainer which is great for beginners.
One of the main advantages with something like a treadmill is that you don’t have to concern yourself about developing a particular technique in order to get the most out of the workout or have to worry that having a bad technique could actually be doing you some harm rather than good. You just have to get onto the treadmill and either walk or run.
One of the reasons that cross trainers have become more popular is because they don’t just give your legs excercise they also tone your arms and this means that you only need one piece of equipment to help you tone your whole body unlike the treadmill which would need free weights alongside the running to effectively tone your arms.
One Joint at a Time
Cross trainers don’t just offer the means to exercise your whole body they are also good for the joints because they are low impact. The legs are moving in a continuous movement rather than landing on the equipment like they are when you are on a treadmill where because of the action of running you are impacting heavily on your joints. This can cause joint problems after an extended period of time, but treadmills are fighting back on this front by having a sprung running platform which absorbs some of the impact which would be solely on the joints otherwise.
Cross trainers still burn the same amount of calories as working out on a treadmill without causing the joints any pain, so that is a major plus for the cross trainer because in the end you want to burn calories in the safest possible way.
Both types of machine can be easily stored, many come with wheels on the bottom which makes them easy to move and pack away. This is a function that most people appreciate because not many people have the luxury of having a room that they can dedicate over to being a gym.
Drawbacks of Home Gym Equipment
Although home gym equipment has big advantages there are drawbacks that both of them have issues with both treadmills and cross trainers are quite monotonous methods of exercise the actions are repetitive and the environment does not change which adds to the feeling of tedium. This is of course the case with all home gym equipment and indeed with all gym equipment in general because they are simply in a room which is why many of them have television screens to provide a visual stimulus and relieve some of the boredom. Although this is a down side to the equipment the positives far outweigh the negatives. Having your own gym equipment allows you to feel confident about working out without worrying about what other people think of you. It also means that you have a gym that you will have access to come rain or shine which is more likely to encourage you to continue with your workout regime rather than go a couple of times and then pack it in.
