Does Exercise Cause Heartburn? How To Exercise Properly If You

Have you ever felt a painful heartburn right after engaging in a strenuous exercise that you felt like its caused by the activity you just engaged yourself in? If you are a GERD sufferer, there are certain types of exercises that you should avoid. These are generally the types that put a lot of pressure on the abdominal muscles. Studies have also shown that those involve in a more stationary form of physical activity tend to produce less acid reflux as compare to one which requires more movement.

The kind of activities that induce the reflux of acid are those that are vigorous and require a lot of up and down motion and movement in the stomach. Some examples are heavy weight lifting, rock climbing, competitive cycling, wrestling, kick boxing, high impact aerobics, jumping rope and long distance swimming. Those that require long periods of time or sudden burst of speed such as football, basketball and rugby might also trigger attack if you are suffering from acid reflux.

This does not mean though that you should not exercise if you are a GERD sufferer. You just have to find the right balance and make the activities lighter to adjust to your condition. You can do brisk walking, low level jogging, light weight lifting and other lower impact exercises.

Try not to engage in any form of exercises right after eating. As always, avoid foods that aggravate its symptoms such as fatty and any form of physical activity or exercise can improve your over all sense of well-being. It can relieve you of your stress and can make you feel good about yourself. Try to find the right balance and moderate your activity so it will become beneficial for you.
