What is asthma?

Asthma is a lung disease which is relates to breathing problems.
Asthma is a chronic disease. The patient shows shortness of breath,
chest tightness; whistling sound while breathing and recurring coughs.
A person can catch asthma at any age. Due to the air we breathe in,
unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyle, more cases are seen every day.

required. This limits the air breathed in and shows the symptoms
mentioned above.

Asthma Symptoms and Triggers

In people who have pollen or dust allergy, asthma is most likely.
Asthma and allergy due to unhealthy air, food or liquids are closely
related. Most prominent symptom of asthma is cough with wheezing. The
cough occurs often during night or early in the morning.
Feeling dry and tight in chest is another common symptom. The most
painful symptom could be falling short of breaths.  They tire easily
and find it very difficult to breathe while running exercising of
doing any physical strenuous work.
In worst cases when a person gets asthma attack, he might gasp for
breath and it could be fatal. Not all the person is asthmatic and all
those who suffer from it might show all these symptom. Hence it is
very important to seek medical attention. The symptoms should be
treated as soon as possible as if worsen, the become life threatening.
Children with wheezing that occurs most often are most likely to catch
asthma. Other triggers may include respiratory infections, allergies,
eczema or it may be inherited.

Treatment and Medication

A doctor can diagnose the disease on the basis of symptoms, medical
history and some physical test. These tests also help detect the
severity. Asthma could be intermittent, mild, moderate or severe.
Treatment and medication is decided as per the severity of asthma.
Make sure during treatment the doctor know that all you are allergic
to, when are the asthma symptoms most prominent.
There is no cure for asthma and it can only be controlled. Treatment
of asthma includes treating symptoms like coughing, shortness of
breath, lung functioning etc.
For proper medication and effective treatment, you would need to
consult your doctor well in time. An asthma control plan could need to
be made. Factors that trigger asthma need to be kept under check
Medicines for asthma are taken orally except when treating
allergies,that causes it. Besides medicines thera re inhalers
available and are most commonly used. Medicines used in treatment are
corticosteroids, inhaled beta 2 agonist, leukotriene modifiers,
cromolyn, nedocromil and theophylline.

Side Effects and asthma medication

As asthma is a chronic disease it needs long term treatment. Asthma is
not curable however it can be effectively controlled and the patients
can lead a normal life. If the medication is discontinued and asthma
reappears, it is likely to be more severe than before. Long term
treatment also affects bones and the patients may develop osteoporosis
due to high intake of corticosteroids.

Precautions

Prevent the trigger that causes asthma Make sure you take your medicine regularly without a miss Consult your doctor and improvise your asthma control plan based on severity and how your body responds to the treatment If you are prone to asthma attack and you use lifesaving inhalers, make sure people around you know and can help you in bad time.
