Bronchial Asthma

There are two medical conditions that are referred to as asthma and in order to differentiate between them, scientists have come up with two terms: cardiac asthma and bronchial asthma. The former is a special condition that usually refers to heart failure, whereas the latter defines an ailment of the tracheobronchial tree. Bronchial asthma is triggered by a variety of stimuli, usually by an allergic reaction to inhaled substances, and it manifests itself by the muscle constriction and the narrowing or tightening of the bronchial ways. The factors that are most likely to give rise to an attack are air pollutants, tobacco smoke, chemicals, perfume, dust, pollen, mold and so on.

Both cardiac and bronchial asthma may look similar in symptoms, there is shortness of breath and wheezing, but their causes are completely different. Shortness of breath in the case of bronchial asthma is caused by a deficiency in ventilation at the level of the airways, and any strenuous efforts of the respiratory muscles may result in an asthma attack. Besides the swelling of the bronchial wall and the spastic movement of the muscles, bronchial asthma is also characterized by an excessive mucus secretion that makes breathing even more difficult in the condition of a narrowed tube. The existing remedies act as dilators, not allowing muscles to contract any further.

In the primary stages of bronchial asthma there are long periods of apparently good health condition, but as the disease is very likely to advance, there are mucus secretions in between crises; moreover, mucus can accumulate inside the air tubes causing infections. The real causes behind bronchial asthma are not known, what comes out in the open is the crisis, very often accompanied by an allergic reaction. Most of the people who suffer from bronchial asthma also manifest some kind of allergy, but there are cases when allergy has nothing to do with the start of an asthmatic fit.

Not only allergens are the triggers of attack of bronchial asthma; stress, physical exercises, great emotions and cold are also responsible for the frequency of the problem. Unfortunately, more and more people are seriously affected by this condition as it can touch anyone regardless of age. At the level of the globe’s population one in twenty individual suffers from asthma, and among children the figures are even more pessimistic, one in ten being affected. Usually, in between attacks, asthmatic people may show little outward sign of health problems. It is all the more difficult to tell when the next fit will occur.
