Triggers And Causes Of Asthma Attacks Revealed
Asthma in a chronic disease that affects the airways causing a difficulty in breathing.
The most important factor in developing asthma is atopy – the inherited tendency towards allergies, therefore if you have relatives with allergies, there is a greater chance for you to develop asthma.
Researchers have also discovered that exposure to certain allergens in early childhood can lead to developing this condition. For example if your mother was exposed to irritants like tobacco smoke when she was pregnant with you, this increases your likelihood to develop asthma.
Likewise, exposure to certain indoor allergens (house dust mites, cat dander, cockroach feces and mold) or chemicals and substances in your workplaces increase the chances of getting asthma, especially since changes in our lifestyle has made us spend more time indoors with reduced ventilation to conserve energy. This traps allergens and irritants inside.
On the other hand, some argue that this hypersensitivity of the immune system is caused by lack of exposure to irritants during childhood. Apparently the emphasis on hygiene and sanitation has made our immune system inadequate when dealing with common allergens. This theory is called “Hygiene Hypothesis”.
Also, over 100 genes have been associated with asthma, many of them related to the immune system or to modulating inflammation, however such studies have not gotten consistent results. Some believe that asthma consists in several diseases, and that these genes play a role in just subsets of asthma.
It appears that asthma is more prevalent in athletes than in the general population, more so in sports such as cycling, mountain biking and long-distance running.
The thing is nobody knows for sure what causes asthma because there is a great variety in different cases. Every treatment is unique in itself and doctors go to great lengths (series of tests, constant monitoring, family history) to figure out what medication and dosage is right for every patient.
