There are more than 60 Million Tones of apples produced each year around the world and this figure is growing rapidly. Apples are estimated to add $15 Billion to the world economy each year.
There are close to 8,000 cultivars of apple with growers cross breeding to develop specific growing traits. A recent cultivar included an apple to would not go brown when sliced. Cross breeding fruits is a good way of developing new varieties. Problems and ethics arise however, when the plant genetics are altered (GMO) to present a specific fruit for a specific purpose.
